Road trip to the mountains? Music fest in the desert? Long weekend on the coast? Wherever your summer adventures take you, you might be asking yourself the age-old, hard-hitting question: Can I bring my weed?

Short answer: sometimes. Cannabis travel isn’t as simple as tossing a pre-roll in your weekender bag, but with the right info, it’s totally possible to travel smart and stay lifted.

Cannabis legality varies by state (and even county). While it’s legal for adult use in 24 states (plus D.C.), you still aren’t allowed to cross state lines with THC, even between legal states.

Here’s the general rule of thumb:

Here’s the general rule of thumb:

  • 🟢 Driving within your legal state: You’re good, just follow local transport laws – including ONLY driving while sober.

  • ⚠️ Driving between legal states: Enforcement is somewhat rare, but this is still technically illegal federally. If it’s legal where you’re headed anyway, you’re probably better off just stocking up after you arrive.

  • 🚨 Airports, national parks, federal land: Always off-limits for cannabis.

Pro tip:
Check norml.org/laws for state-specific regulations before you hit the road.

If you’re traveling by car and sticking to legal ground, you can generally bring your cannabis with you, as long as you do it right:

  • Keep products sealed in original packaging

  • Store them in the trunk or a lockable container

  • Make sure the quantity is under your state’s legal possession limit

Avoid bringing anything homemade or unlabeled, like infused snacks or mystery tinctures, especially if you’re crossing checkpoints or in case you get pulled over (hey, it can happen to anyone).

Can you fly with cannabis? 🛫

Can you fly with cannabis? 🛫

Flying with cannabis is pretty risky, even if you’re traveling between two legal states. Air travel is federally regulated and THC remains a Schedule I substance on a federal level.

That said, TSA is focused on safety, not weed enforcement. According to their website, “TSA security officers do not search for [cannabis]... but if any illegal substance is discovered, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.”

This applies to international travel as well. We’ve already noted above that flying with cannabis from a U.S. airport is illegal under U.S. federal law; when traveling between two countries where cannabis is federally legal, those countries also are likely to have laws prohibiting entering and exiting their country with cannabis in your possession.

CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are allowed. For anything else, you’re taking a personal legal risk. If you do decide to try your luck and fly anyway, keep products tightly sealed and avoid anything that smells strongly or could leak.

  • Stick to local laws and know your destination’s rules.

  • Road tripping? Keep it sealed, labeled, and stored safely.

  • Flying with THC? We don’t recommend it. Proceed with extreme caution (or opt for CBD).
